What is a Liberated Soul?
by David Bruce Hughes
A liberated soul is a living entity who has overcome the conditioning of material existence and realized his eternal spiritual nature. This site is part of an extensive research program into people who have Mokṣa-kāraka or the indication of potential liberation in their Vedic Astrology chart. We are developing reliable ways of recognizing people with extraordinary spiritual qualifications and helping them to realize their highest potential.
Mokṣa-kāraka means that we have a very rare, very special opportunity to complete the spiritual path in this lifetime. How well we take advantage of that opportunity is up to us. The purpose of the ancient spiritual tradition of the Esoteric Teaching we represent is to assist sincere souls in attaining this highest aim of spiritual life. Here are the astrological specifics:
- If there is a benefic in Vyaya, while its Lord is exalted, or is yuti with, or receives a Dṛṣṭi from a benefic, one will attain final emancipation. [BPHS 23.10]
- In Mīna Navāṁśa the Ātmā Kāraka will grant final emancipation. [BPHS 33.2-8]
- One will attain full enlightenment if Ketu is in the 12th [from Karakāṁśā] identical with Meṣa or Dhanuḥ and receives a Dṛṣṭi from a benefic. If Ketu is in the 12th from Karakāṁśā, receiving a Dṛṣṭi from a malefic, or is there yuti with a malefic, one will not attain full enlightenment. [BPHS 33.63-74]
- [If Budha is] in Sabhā [Avasthā] and happens to be in exaltation, [the subject] will be affluent and meritorious at all times, will be equal to Kuvera, or will be a king or a minister, will be devoted to Lord Viṣṇu and Lord Śiva, will be virtuous and will attain full enlightenment. [BPHS 45.76-86]
These are the technical descriptions, and you can look them up in our Jyotish course if you want to be able to find them yourself.
If you have Mokṣa-kāraka in your chart, it doesn't necessarily mean that are liberated already, but it does mean that you have a very good chance of attaining liberation in this lifetime. The chart simply indicates the celestial influences; the soul has free will and can accept or reject those influences. The door to the spiritual world is unlocked; you just have to open it and walk through. Finding that door and entering into the spiritual world is the highest goal of human life.
Mokṣa-kāraka is a very big deal. Our spiritual master Srila Prabhupada says,
"The real problem of life in the material world is to solve the question of birth, death, old age and disease. No one wants to change his birthright, no one wants to meet death, no one wants to be old or invalid, and no one wants diseases. But these problems are solved neither by the grace of any demigod nor by the so-called advancement of material science. In the Bhagavad-gītā, as well as in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, such less intelligent persons have been described as devoid of all good sense. Śukadeva Gosvāmī said that out of the 8,400,000 species of living entities, the human form of life is rare and valuable, and out of those rare human beings those who are conscious of the material problems are rarer still, and the still more rare persons are those who are conscious of the value of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, which contains the messages of the Lord and His pure devotees. Death is inevitable for everyone, intelligent or foolish. But Parīkṣit Mahārāja has been addressed by the Gosvāmī as the manīṣī, or the man of highly developed mind, because at the time of death he left all material enjoyment and completely surrendered unto the lotus feet of the Lord by hearing His messages from the right person, Śukadeva Gosvāmī. But aspirations for material enjoyment by endeavoring persons are condemned. Such aspirations are something like the intoxication of the degraded human society. Intelligent persons should try to avoid these aspirations and seek instead the permanent life by returning home, back to Godhead." [Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.3.2-7 Purport]
Srila Prabhupada once told a story about how rare Mokṣa-kāraka is. There is an old tortoise swimming deep in the Pacific ocean, and once a year he comes up for air. There is a piece of driftwood floating in the vast ocean, and it happens to have a knothole in one end. When the tortoise comes up for air, he just happens to poke his head through that hole. What are the chances of that? That is how rare Mokṣa-kāraka or the chance to achieve complete liberation is.
So if you have this indication in your chart you are very, very lucky, very blessed. There are many people who would give anything to be in your position. Please do not waste this valuable chance to end all your suffering in the material world and attain the goal of human life: self-realization.
