Throughout this pandemic, there has been a lot of suffering. The entire globe is in mourning. People have died. People are exhausted. People have been struggling financially. Gofundme, which started as crowdfunding to raise support for certain projects, is currently being used as a supplement for unemployment, housing support and lack of healthcare.

In the midst of the global pandemic, someone’s who’s work comes to mind is Jazzie Collins. She is the blueprint for the organizing work desperately needed now as people face evictions, job insecurity, and a pandemic.

Jazzie Collins was a black trans woman who centered her organizing work on economic inequality, transfer rights, and disability rights. Her resume is LONG and this post barely scratches the surface of her work. I hope that this post inspires us all to dig further into the map that Collins left us to build a better world.

Collins led a food pantry, the 6th Street Agenda. She also led Mission AntiDisplacement Coalition which aimed to fight against neighborhood displacement through means of evictions and gentrification.

Collins’ class analysis was not only centered on housing displacement, but she also pushed towards increasing business taxes and raising wages. She is also one of the original members of Queers for Economic Equality Now (QUEEN).

Collins’ work also focused on trans rights, ageism and ableism through organizing the San Francisco Trans March and Senior & Disability Action, respectfully.

You can view a clip of her speaking at the “No More Evictions” protests listed below.

Her work is so thorough and well-rounded. Jazzie Collins did not leave anyone behind as she pressed towards a better world.

This is a woman of inspiring leadership and empathy. Jazzie Collins, we honor you.
