Marie Van Brittan Brown: Self-Security
If you’ve ever used a security system, you have Brown to thank. Modern day security systems that include intercommunication technology, video, audio, recording, lights, wifi connections, the emergency button to contact police & fire departments, and even the peephole have been made possible due to the contribution of Marie Van Brittan Brown.

She was motivated to solve a problem she faced while living in Queens, New York. Police response times were too long for the community to adequately receive the support they needed. Ironically, black communities have long endured the dichotomy of being over-policed but underserved.
Brown and her husband developed their security system as a means of self-protection and emergency alert to help homeowners (eventually business owners began using it too).
Marie Van Brittan Brown we thank you for your innovation and responding when public resources would not. We honor you.
