Andrea Jenkins is a transgender activist known as the first black openly transgender woman elected to public office in the United States. In addition to working in politics, she is a performance artist, and poet.

 

Much of her work has centered supporting defunding police by redirecting funds to community programs; and supporting trans rights. This includes founding Trans United Fund, a political action committee to aid transgender candidates, and working University of Minnesota’s Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Studies where she curates the Transgender Oral History Project.

 

She organized a City Council summit regarding transgender equity intended to address the issues trans people in Minnesota endure.
